This event has ended.

Mountain Fold plesents the opening of "Night Eyes," an installation of new work by mudboy. The show invites the viewer to become engulfed in a darkness, dimly lit by analog hand-made holographic light projectors and populated by sculptural figures, spectral and often terrifying soundscapes, wall murals, and other mysteries. mudboy creates a visceral realm that engages sensation as a participatory act and thereby speaks directly to our most hidden intelligences.

"Night Eyes" leads visitors, themselves about to become part of the installation, through an entry chamber: it transitions from echoes of the world outside to a kinetic environment that resembles workings of the non-verbal, unconscious self. mudboy has restructured discarded camera lenses to project mesmerizing, "attractors"--kaleidoscopic dramas--onto the walls, but everywhere else is the scent of oddity, of metamorphic things not quite living, not quite grasped, and yet all too familiar.

This installation is a re-imagining of the artist's "Night Eyes" musical performance for pipe organ, cell phone and electronics, which he recently performed for ISEA 2010 in Dortmund, Germany. The musical composition collides in the installation with the visual objects and projections to deliver communications from the 1984 film, Nightmare on Elm Street, itself a meditation on the dream state. Together they produce the multi-textural unfolding of desire, fear, and the ephemeral. The viewer, caught in a moment between hypnosis and mania, expectantly waits for the cinematic projections to freeze, while holding breath lest the sculptures move. The machines anthropomorphize, and the implicated viewers become lifeless.

"Night Eyes" lures the viewer into a space that feels like a trip, a trap, and a willful suspension, to revel in an experience of the uncanny.
