"Mind-Over-Matter" Exhibition

Meulensteen presents Mind Over Matter, a group show of contemporary ceramics curated by Annabeth Rosen, including work by John Chwekun, Benjamin DeMott, Julia Haft- Candell, Mary Alison Lucas, Jim Melchert, Joyce Robins, Jim Shrosbree, and Lisa Wolkow. The exhibition takes as its point of departure the work and legacy of Richard Devore, whose black vessels will be exhibited concurrently in the gallery’s main space. Rosen explains: Richard Devore was a conceptual sensualist. He paid attention to the esoteric and the elusive impulses that inform both learned and intuitive knowledge. He constructed form in an in-depth, deliberately sensitized, nuanced exploration, over and over again, until the work was no longer what it was perceived to be; it became form as the armature for idea. Like saying a word over and over, its meaning is subsumed as other sensibilities take over. Even though his works carry the vessel icon, they are other; they are made from the inside out physically and conceptually, like something formed or found in nature. The work in Mind Over Matter explores the medium of ceramics as something other than form. The sculptures, with little matter and less form, reflect eccentric geometries and capture the unexpected and sometimes unpremeditated work that comes from exploring matter, following the natural order of an idiosyncratic logic. This exhibition and the concurrent exhibition of Richard DeVore’s work at Meulensteen act as foils for each other, coming from opposite directions, aiming for intimacy, and both exploiting and transcending material. Annabeth Rosen’s work was the subject of an exhibition in the Project Space at Meulensteen in the fall of 2010. Her work has been included in numerous exhibitions including Overthrown: Clay Without Limits at the Denver Art Museum; Full and Spare at the Florida State University Art Museum, Tallahassee; The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, New Langton Arts, San Francisco; NCECA International Exhibition Series, Taipei County Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taipei, Taiwan; and Cranbrook to Lancaster and Back, Network Gallery, Cranbrook Museum of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In 2010 she served as a contributing organizer for the symposium “CRITICAL Santa Fe: Developing Criticism in Ceramics,” sponsored by the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts. Rosen has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and is the Robert Arneson Chair in Ceramics at the University of California Davis.
