"MEND: A Knitting Intervention with Liz Collins" Exhibition
Underline Gallery
This event has ended.
Join us the last weekend in September for a three-day knitting intervention and craft residency with artist and designer Liz Collins. For the duration of the project, Collins, recognized internationally for her use of knitting in the diverse fields of fashion design, textiles, performance, and installation, will turn Underline Gallery into a Knitting Exchange workshop, offering a mending service for a nominal fee between $40 and $200.The public is invited to bring in new, worn, or forgotten t-shirts, blouses, sweaters, and other garments to be transformed on the spot into entirely new wearable pieces.
Based upon the Japanese tradition of 'kintsugi,' in which broken ceramics are brought back to life through gold embellishment, Collins’ artistic service will emphasize the lifeline of the garment, enhancing each object by combining it with the drastically disparate medium of knitting.Through the use of a knitting machine and a range of multi-colored yarns, Collins will convert the act of mending into a radically significant gesture that will repair and revitalize even the most damaged garment, resulting in a repurposed product that has the ability to transform—and claim—a new kind of purpose and preciousness.
