This event has ended.

UNDERLINE Gallery (238 W. 14th St.) invites members and patrons to take a laughing portrait with Caroll Taveras by appointment.

In “Let Yourself Go!,” artist Caroll Taveras explores what it takes to let oneself go and laugh uncontrollably. What induces laughter? Satisfying laughter, healing laughter? Laughter that fills you with serotonin, which is a contributor to feelings of well being and happiness.

Taveras has taken portraits using large format film, preserving the tradition of community portraiture, since 2008. She has shot such notables as Lena Dunham, Mark Ronson, and Isabella Rossellini. Since its initial inception in Brooklyn, her ‘Photo Studio Project’ has traveled to Manhattan, London, and Los Angeles, capturing images of the faces that inhabit the neighborhoods in which she pops up.Taveras says, “My goal is to recreate the experience of the traditional portrait studio, much like those of the past that dedicated themselves to cataloging the history of communities for generations through the formal portrait.”

Now UNDERLINE patrons, too, can experience something of the past – something the digital age doesn’t inspire: a self or family portrait that is further enhanced by ‘letting oneself go.”Tradition drives social context in this investigation of community, laughter, imagery and self. For five days, UNDERLINE will transform into Taveras’ photo studio, filled with laughter and lightness. Appointments require a reservation fee and are on a first come basis. The “Let Yourself Go!,” prints are available for purchase by patrons and subjects.
