"Kunst Gruppe" Exhibition
Werkstatte Gallery
This event has ended.
The intention of KUNST GRUPPE is to expose the current aesthetic interest (identity) of Werkstätte — a new gallery off Manhattan's Bowery. Werkstätte recognizes that as a new American gallery bearing a German name, it has peaked varied curiosities as to whom the people behind it are, and what they aim to proffer to the New York art community.
Those with a working knowledge of German, especially as it relates to art, will recognize the show's title as a rough (i.e. "improper") assemblage of the of the German words for "art" and "group". Paired, these words do not quite amount to nonsense (they do in fact hint at a meaning), however they do smack of invention. That invention was designed as a friendly, if not humorous, invitation to peek behind the curtain and understand Werkstätte as the American project of American people with an interest in certain Austrian and German reference.
KUNST GRUPPE was curated with the desire to represent the gallery's interests in the three tactile mediums: painting, drawing and sculpture. The exhibition is binary, in the spirit of a "before and after" study. The gallery will house an exhibit of a grouping of works typically shown by the included artists — this, the "after". A limited edition catalog, composed of images of the artist's drawings, and studies for larger works, acts as the "before". In this way, Kunst Gruppe delineates the gallery's over-arching interest in process.
