"Into the Sunset: Photography's Image of the American West" Exhibition
The Museum of Modern Art
This event has ended.
The development of photography coincided with the exploration and settlement of the American West, and this simultaneous growth fostered a complex relationship that has shaped the perception of the region's physical and social landscape to this day. "Into the Sunset" examines the ways in which photography has pictured, established, and transformed the idea of the American West from 1850 to the present. Over 130 works are organized by subject, with groupings devoted to the sublime landscape, car culture, images of Native Americans, fables of cowboys and outlaws, Hollywood, and the psychology of failed promise, among other themes.
