In this exhibition, the works of Tokushima and Okada trigger a travel back in time. Their paintings and drawings mirror a specific period when nothing was dispensable, and everything was used to its very end with appreciation —a spirit that has faded in the current era of digital technology and mass production. “Back then in Japan, people treated objects with great care, repairing them when necessary. When something could not function anymore, it would be thanked for its many years of usefulness,” says Okada. Created entirely by hand, with generous use of mnemonic patterns and colors, the works of Tokushima and Okada portray a lifestyle where heart-felt design won over convenience, and when slow but sincere relationships were cherished over quick communication. Through a visual storytelling of the good times then, the exhibition invites viewers to be immersed in a warm nostalgic air.
