This event has ended.

UNDERLINE Gallery presents a new exhibition, THE YOUNG AND THE RECLUSE: A Voyeuristic Photojournal, featuring a group of young, talented, international
photographers, whose aesthetic matches that of the clients they shoot for: Levi’s, Urban Outfitters, and Nylon, for example. In addition to limited-edition prints lining the gallery walls, dedicated social media pages and activity will be projected in real-time.

With camera phones ready to capture a moment, any moment, on a mere whim, photography has gradually navigated away from revealing a truth of the world around us and become pigeonholed into nothing more than a mirror of our own narcissism. This makes that rare bird of a photograph, which moves us, transports us, and betrays a part of the soul, rather than the ego, all the more ethereal.

THE YOUNG AND THE RECLUSE regains that lost sense of intimacy between subject and audience. The images taunt us by melding life and art, tangled together to develop a brief storm of emotion, awe, and good humor. The vulnerability and subjective camera angles behind the work create an uneasy sense of barging into a mid-afternoon bedroom liaison or capturing the irregular rhythms of an obsessive need to be seen by others.

“At a time when posting photos online is oh-so-omnipresent, we were interested in the documentary nature of a group of artists whose lustful work has become on-demand and fashionable via social media,” says Patrick Sullivan, owner of UNDERLINE Gallery. Presenting us with images that are an archetype of human life itself, we are left with much more than mere moments in time captured in a
still frame. They are thorny and stirring. They are candid and engrossing. They are The Young and The Recluse.
